Senior Citizen Tricked by AI Voice-Cloning Scam
A 69-year-old senior citizen lost about R870,900 after scammers cloned the voice of a trusted community leader during an urgent WhatsApp call. Believing a friend was stranded and needed emergency cash, the victim handed the money to a courier before realising it was a fraud.
What happened
A 69-year-old man received an urgent WhatsApp call from an unknown number showing the profile picture of a respected community leader. The caller sounded exactly like the trusted leader, claiming to be stranded and in desperate need of emergency money. The victim raised about R870,900 (5,000,000 INR) with assistance from a friend and handed the physical cash to a courier. After the handover, the caller became unreachable, and the real community leader confirmed he had never requested any help.
How it worked
Scammers use artificial intelligence to sample audio from public videos or voice notes and clone a real person's voice. They then pair this realistic artificial voice with a familiar profile photo on a messaging app to create urgency. By pretending there is an immediate emergency, they pressure victims to act before verifying the story. In this case, requesting physical cash handed over to a courier made the stolen funds much harder for authorities to trace.
How to protect yourself
- End the call immediately if a familiar voice asks for urgent financial help from an unknown number.
- Call the person back directly on their official or pre-saved phone number to check if the emergency is real.
- Never hand over cash or transfer money without independent verification, and report suspicious calls to your bank's fraud line or the South African Police Service on 10111.
