Police Warn of Fake SAPS Job Offers on WhatsApp Demanding Cash
Police in KwaZulu-Natal are warning the public about fraudsters sending WhatsApp messages offering fake SAPS jobs. The scammers demand an upfront cash deposit of R7,500 to secure the position.
What happened
Scammers are sending WhatsApp messages to unsuspecting people offering positions in the police service. To trick victims, the fraudsters display a profile picture of Major-General SB Ngcobo, a senior police official. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Magwaza alerted the public that these offers are fraudulent.
How it worked
The scammers send a direct WhatsApp message to prospective job seekers offering employment in the police service. They immediately send an application form and demand a total payment of R15,000 for the job. Victims are instructed to pay an initial deposit of R7,500 upfront, with the rest due when signing papers.
How to protect yourself
- Remember that legitimate government and police jobs are never for sale.
- Never pay money or a deposit to anyone promising employment.
- Report suspicious job offers on WhatsApp to your nearest police station.
