Home & Personal Safety: A Safety Reminder
A few good habits worth keeping close by when it comes to home & personal safety.
Why this matters
Scammers and criminals targeting older people at home often rely on a uniform, a clipboard, or a convincing story to get through the front door or catch you off guard.
How to do it
Treat every unexpected visitor the same way: check who it is before opening the door, ask for ID, and phone the company or municipality directly to confirm before letting anyone in or handing over any money.
Quick recap
- Always check who's at the door before opening it — use a peephole or window first.
- If someone claims to be from Eskom, the municipality, or a similar service, ask for ID and call the office directly to confirm before letting them in.
- Close your curtains at night and keep valuables out of view from outside.
