Beware of fake South African Police job adverts online

Fake online advertisements are claiming that the South African Police Service is offering entry-level jobs. The police force has warned that these posts are scams.

What happened

A fake poster has been circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook in South Africa. It lists various positions and salaries, claiming to offer entry-level police jobs. The South African Police Service confirmed they are not running these adverts.

How it worked

First, scammers share a poster with unofficial website links and WhatsApp numbers. Next, clicking the links leads to websites with many pop-up adverts that make money for the scammers. Finally, they try to get you to message them on WhatsApp to steal your personal or banking details.

How to protect yourself

• Only look for job vacancies directly on the official police website at saps.gov.za.
• Never pay any money to apply for a job, as the police force will never ask for payment.
• Do not share or forward job adverts that use unverified WhatsApp numbers or unofficial links.
