Beware of fake police video calls: A senior couple's safety warning

What happened

A 70-year-old retired resident received a call claiming his bank account was used to fund a terror attack. Scammers sent a doctored arrest warrant over WhatsApp and kept the couple under continuous video surveillance inside their home. Terrified and isolated, the husband transferred 30 Lakh Rupees before realizing it was a scam when more money was demanded.

How it worked

Scammers call pretending to be police or government agents and make serious criminal accusations. They send fake official documents over messaging apps to make their threats look real. Next, they force the victims to stay on video calls, pretending they are under 'digital arrest' to stop them from calling family or the bank. Finally, they demand a temporary money transfer for clearance, promising a full refund.

How to protect yourself

• Know that real police and government agencies will never arrest you over a video call or ask for online deposits.
• Never make urgent bank transfers under pressure or threats from an unsolicited caller.
• Talk to your family, a trusted neighbor, or your bank immediately if someone tells you to keep a call secret.
